How Often Should You Do Pilates to See Results?
After 22+ years of teaching at our Lakeview and Lincoln Park studios, we know that someone who comes twice a week for three months will see better results than someone who comes every day for three weeks and then disappears, only to do it all again in 2 months. Consistency is the single best predictor of physical progress.
And this isn’t just something we’ve observed, we actually measured it! In a recent client survey, the members who reported the most change in strength, posture, and bodily awareness were the ones showing up regularly, not necessarily the most frequently. And when they experience life changes, they allow their Pilates practice to shift with them, rather than dropping it.
We’ve found that consistency does something else too: it’s what makes Core feel like a community instead of a gym. When you show up regularly, your instructors learn your body, remember your history, and tailor each class to you (even if it’s a group class). That relationship is a big part of why consistent clients get stronger faster, and why they stay in the long term.
So, we know that consistency matters. Let’s get into the specifics:
How many days a week should you do Pilates?
For most people, 2 to 3 sessions per week is the sweet spot. It’s enough to establish routines, but allows for rest and other forms of exercise. If you’re just starting out, you’ll likely begin to see improvements around the 8th–10th session. This might mean posture improvements, increased mobility or strength, or just feeling better in a way you can’t describe.
Can you do Pilates every day?
Yes, you can, but make sure that’s sustainable for you. So if you’re not used to movement every day, try 2–3 classes per week and build up. Recovery days are just as important as high activity ones. Also, make sure you’re leaving room for other exercises such as cardio and strength training.
Does it matter whether you do mat or reformer?
Both Mat and Reformer Pilates are excellent workouts. Again, whatever is sustainable for you. If you like one or the other, stick with the one that keeps you coming back.
How often should you do Pilates? Finding your right frequency
Every body is different, and what’s going on in your life and body will impact what works best for you. If you’re getting back into movement after having a baby, or rehabbing an injury, your schedule might look different from it used to. To find your frequency, come try out a few classes!
Should you do Privates or Group Classes?
We have an entire blog post about this, but we recommend a mixture of both, if possible.
